try something new every day

I know it's a cliche, but in my advertising class, they really push the idea of being more creative by seeing the world in a unique way, always taking in information in the hopes of making creative connections, and generally just being always aware, always absorbing details, always fully experiencing life. So I'm trying to try something new once a day, or at least once every other day.

I started keeping track on Friday. So...

Friday: Snowball fight at an ice skating rink. It wasn't "real" snow, but it was fun, and I enjoyed watching the kids get all aggressive and crazy with each other. I guess in a snowball fight everyone is fair game, so even though there were teams, I mostly got hit by people on my own side. Also, the snow was very pretty flying through the air.

Saturday: Country line dancing. This is an experience that will improve over time if I actually try to learn. There is something really really fun about structure. At least to me. Dancing steps in time with everyone else is way more fun in some ways than just shaking your booty, although shaking your booty has its perks I guess. But I could tell from watching the other people that when you know what you're doing, the experience is very satisfying. Reminded me of obon in some ways. I learned to "grapevine." There were many people wearing cowboy hats, and everyone in jeans, and I also suddenly really wanted some boots. A country line dancing bar is maybe the first place I've seen where the old crusty men get the hot young chicks, becayse they're the ones who actually know how to dance.

Sunday: Okonomiyaki. I did not enjoy this particular Japanese food very much, but I do not especially like cabbage. Still, it was cool to try a new Japanese food. I ordered the one with corn and bacon. Next time I will get more add-ins and use more sauce. The menu was hand-written on sheet paper. A real hole in the wall, and just across the street from my house. By 7 every table, and it was a good mix of Japanese people and hipsters, so it must be decent. Good to know.

Tuesday: Fat Tuesday, work brought in Ragin Cajun for lunch and I got to try crawfish etouffee, hushpuppies, and king cake. It was all delicious! Crawfishes are much smaller than I thought, they are actually like microscopic lobsters. I like them because they are chewy, but they don't have that "I'm eating an animal in its entirety" texture that I hate about shrimp. For dinner I also tried tilapia for the first time. It was good, but I think it was helped by a very rich cabernet sauce.

Wednesday: I browsed the bookstore at Mitsuwa for the first time and bought a book called "Corsage and Something Like Corsage" which teaches you how to make cute little flower pins. I've actually never tried looking in a Japanese bookstore, but they have the most beautiful picture books, especially about food. Their photos are all just so lovely, they have that "morning sunshine through an open window" glow to them. I wonder if the sunshine looks different in other places, I've never paid attention. But the photos were great, I wanted to buy so many books. And suddenly I really regretted not trying harder in Japanese school.

I will post some food photos when I get a chance.
